The Bastille is famous for being the location of the destroyed Bastille Prison. Initially buit as a fortified royal residence during the
late 1300's, the Bastille was converted into a prison in the 17th century. During the first year of the French Revolution, the Storming of the Bastille took place. On July 14, 1789, a mob of about 8,000 people broke into the prison in a bid to free the prisoners who were held there, which was a total of 7 people. Mutinous Gardes Francaises of the Royal Army joined the mob and by 5.30 that afternoon the prisoners were released. Shortly after the storming, the Bastille prison was demolished. The only ruins that are left of the Bastille is one tower of the fort. This was relocated to the nearby park, Square Henri-Galli. Where the Bastille prison once stood is now known as Place de la Bastille. The original outline of the fort is marked out in special paving stones over the areas streets and sidewalks.
Place de la Bastille is easily recognisable as situated in the middle of the square is the 52m-high Colonne de Juillet, with the gilded and winged figure of Liberty adorning the top of it. This monument was erected in memory to those who died during the street battles of the 1830 July Revolution. The bodies of those who died are buried under the column. Other main attractions in and around Place de la Bastille include the modern opera house, Opera Bastille, a marina for pleasure boats and the peaceful Canal Saint Martin. A large, open-air market takes place on Thursdays and Sundays in the park north of the Place de la Bastille. The north-eastern area of the Bastille is a great social hub at night with numerous cafes, bars, nightclubs and concert halls located here.
