The Left Bank, or La Rive Gauche, is the southern bank of the River Seine. The districts that make up this bohemian area include Saint-Germain-des-Pres and Montparnasse. It is known as the cultural and student district of Paris. The Left Bank has been home to numerous famous artists, writers and philosophers throughout the city's history. Some of the most recognisable names who have made up the Montparnasse artistic community include Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Jean-Paul Sartre, Ernest Hemingway and F.Scott Fitzgerald.

Located on the south bank of the River Seine lies some of the most popular attractions Paris has to offer. The iconic Eiffel Tower is situated in the Parc du Champs de Mars. Further east of the park is the Esplanade des Invalides, which is famous for being the final resting place of one of the most famous French men, Napoleon. Located in this same area is the impressive Hotel de France Invalides, which was built by Louis XIV to house disabled war veterans (invalides). Two important art museums situated on the Left Bank include the Musee Rodin, which was Rodin's home, and the Musee D Orsay. The latter of the two is a magnificent building, which was once a train station. The world famous impressionist collection is housed in the Musee D Orsay. The magnificent 18th-century neoclassical Pantheon is also located on the Left Bank.

One of the areas on the Left Bank, which is most popular with locals and tourists alike, is the Latin Quarter. This area, based around the Sorbonne University, became known as the Latin Quarter as the students and professors who lived and worked there communicated through Latin. Today, there is still a student presence, along with a fantastic social scene.
