The Marais district is located on the right bank of the River Seine. What was once a swamp (marais in French) is now one of the oldest and historic areas of Paris. During the reign of Henri IV and Louis XIII, the Marais prospered. However, after the Revolution of 1789, the area fell into ruin. The lively Marais that we see today is as a result of a 1960's revival. Since the 60's, this area has developed into a centre of art and culture. Visitors make their way to the Marais to view it's preserved narrow streets and architectural styles from the Medieval and Renaissance-era Paris. The Marais is home to a large Jewish and Chinese community. There is also a significant gay community developing in this area.
The Marais is home to a number of popular attractions and some less well-known ones. Rue des Frances-Bourgeois is the most famous shopping street in the Marais. Here, you will find stylish boutiques, home design and many great restuarants and bars. The Marais is also the location of the oldest planned square in the city, Place des Vosges. Victor Hugo, who wrote the famous 'Hunchback of Notre Dame' lived in an apartment in the square's Hotel de Rohan-Guemenee for a number of years. Maison de Victor Hugo is now a museum dedicated to the life and works of the author. Musee Picasso is located in the Hotel Sale in rue de Thorigny. There are over 3500 pieces of Picasso's work in the museum's collection. Pletzl is worth a visit to experience some Jewish culture or to visit the area's boutiques.
