The Temple, which was located in the 3rd arrondissement, was initially constructed as a medieval fortress by the Knights of the Templar in the 12th century. The Temple is renowned for being the prison of the royal family during the French Revolution. The royals who were imprisoned here were King Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, Madame Elisabeth, Louis XVII and Princess Marie-Therese. King Louis XVI was led from the Temple to the guillotine at Place de la Revolution. In 1808, the Temple was demolished by Napoleon as it had become a site of Royalist pilgrimages.
